From tracking spring peepers and raising tadpoles to learning about seeds and recording plant growth, Explore Spring! 25 Great Ways to Learn About Spring invites young readers to explore the wonders of spring by becoming scientists in the field. Combining hands-on learning with solid science, trivia, riddles, and terrific illustrations, projects investigate "the reason for the season" and include identifying trees and measuring their growth, recording soil temperature, and observing the forest floor. Bird migration and nest building are covered, and the movement of air and water is studied with experiments in capillary action and in such activities as "Making Parachutes," Making Kites," and "Mapping Air Currents with Bubbles."

Gr 1-4-Providing scientific explanations and experiments to test the facts, these hands-on projects challenge readers to make connections from the phenomena they observe. Bold, black-and-white cartoons and occasional jokes add levity to the science. Unfortunately, the illustrations give the impression that this is not a book to be taken seriously. That's too bad because the information is sound, with engaging activities to test and illuminate spring events. The six chapters cover such subjects as the sun, plants, animals, babies, and weather. With a heavy emphasis on keeping a journal to record observations, many of the activities can be developed into science projects. This is a fun and worthwhile book that is not served well by its format. The index, glossary, and list of additional books on the subjects are useful, but nonspecific links to Web sites such as the Library of Congress, the Weather Channel, and Wikipedia are less helpful."Janet S.
